Music Program Thank You
A big thank you to those who came and supported the Kennedy music program at our first concert of the year! We had fun performing for parents and community members in the Churchill auditorium. This offered students the chance to perform in the same auditorium they will use when they move up to Churchill high school. A big thank you to our Kennedy community for their generous financial donations. Future concerts will be announced soon and will be posted on the school website, as well as the classroom website.
Kennedy Lego Robotics Takes First Place at Tournament
Students at Kennedy Middle School engage in a dynamic Lego Robotics Club, meeting once a week on Thursdays after school. Students typically group up in teams, sharing one robotics kit between three to five "young engineers." A wide range of activities during club meetings includes robot-to-robot "sumo-'bot" challenges, directing missions on the FIRST Lego League missions board, and the exploration of complicated gearing, use of sensors, and advanced uses of programming.
Kennedy's Lego Robotics Club invites students from other middle schools, home-schoolers, and the occasional elementary age student to participate. The club specializes in its "spin-off" group, the competing FIRST Lego League team. This year's team, The Knights of the Squared Table, took first place for its research project at the December tournament in Albany, Oregon. The team advanced to the state championships, held January 19 in Hillsboro. Over the course of these last six years the program has received funding from its corporate sponsor, Life Technologies, and International Biotech Corporation.
Calendar Changed to Restore School Days
4J schools were closed due to snow and ice for four days in December. The school calendar has been adjusted to restore the missed school days and balance the length of the trimesters. Printable calendar
- The snow days will be made up on March 31, April 17 and 18, and May 23. These days were previously scheduled to be furlough days.
- The end of the second trimester and the no-school days for grading, professional development and planning have been postponed by one week.
- If any more school days are missed due to hazardous weather, they will be made up at the end of the school year.

Thank you to all who participated in last Spring’s library fundraiser. With the help of an army of dedicated volunteers headed by Laura Friesen, volunteer librarian extraordinaire, we have seen a transformation right before our eyes. On Wednesday, we were treated to a Library Open House where we got to check out the beauty of the facility and were given a little “book talk” by Laura describing many of the new books in our ever-growing collection. To date we have spent $3,600 of our $5,000 raised in the Spring and $1,300 of our Scholastic Book Fair dollars. This helps us replace many of the out dated books that have been discarded with a collection that is new, bright and relevant. Keep an eye out for more improvements to come and a great big shout out to Laura Friesen and her enthusiastic staff.
